On Monday, 12 July 2007, the Secretary General of the Higher Population Council and Head of the Executive Office of the Arab Council for Population and Development, Dr. Abla Amawi, participated in The Arab celebration of World Population Day.
The celebration is organized by the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States - Social Affairs Sector -Population Policies Department / Technical Secretariat of the Arab Council for Population and Development In cooperation with (UNFPA) the United Nations Population Fund / Office of Arab States, under the patronage of the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Abu Al-Ghait, at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in Cairo.
The celebration included a number of events, including screening a documentary about the effects of COVID-19 pandemic on various population groups in the Arab world, screening a short film regarding the composite population and development Index.
In addition to the launching of strengthening the capabilities of Arab national population councils and committees guide prepared by the Higher Population Council, and representing proposal model for an integrated system of strategic planning with results for the Arab National Population Councils and Committees or judges.
Dr. Amawi affirmed in her speech during the celebration that the guide to enhancing the capacities of the Arab National Population Councils and Committees aims to transfer knowledge to unify Arab efforts in supporting population and development issues, and to provide technical support to member states to keep pacing with international and regional developments, further more to assist the councils and enhance their capabilities in developing and updating legislation and policies And effective national strategies related to population issues and dynamics in line with international and regional developments, through joint scientific planning based on proven scientific evidence.
Amawi pointed to the importance of finding mechanisms to support and institutionalize coordination and cooperation between Arab countries in the field of population and development issues in order to promote the integration of population issues and dynamics as an active factor in national policies, strategies and action plans, and regional and national development programs and projects, especially with the continuing impact of regional crises in the Arab region. Which has become an obstacle to achieving sustainable development and implementing, monitoring and benefiting from the 2020 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Amawi advised that Arab countries must prepare and make efforts to advance the pivotal role in facing the regional challenges that have been imposed on them, because of conflicts, armed disputes, instability and their devastating impact on different groups of the population.
Likewise, she indicated that there is a need for the Arab National Population Councils and Committees to work and focus on building partnerships with government agencies, national statistics departments and research centers, so that they can play their role by providing decision makers with policy proposals based on solid evidence and pouring into the integration of the population dimension and characteristics of different population groups in development plans, the most important of which is Currently, crisis response plans to ensure the achievement of comprehensive social protection for all segments of society.
